In *Le Vingtième Siècle*, Robida imagines daily life in Paris in 1952, featuring aerial transportation, long-distance communications, automation, and other inventions that anticipate aspects of contemporary society with surprising precision. Far removed from the scientific rationalism of Jules Verne, Robida uses the future as a tool for satirizing the customs and transformations of modern society, foreshadowing the imagery we now associate with steampunk. *Le XIXe Siècle* ideally completes the project with a look back at the century just passed, retracing—through a rich array of illustrations—the fashions, customs, inventions, and transformations of nineteenth-century French and European society. Taken as a whole, the collection attests to Robida’s extraordinary ability to depict the past and the future through irony, caricature, and a surprising visionary streak.
