Portrait of Count Johanns Mathias von der Schulenburg. 1731. Chisel engraving, 470 × 335 mm, after a painting by Antonio Maria Ruschi. A fine example of this rare engraving, in which the young Pitteri adopts Claude Mellan’s technique, based exclusively on parallel lines without crossing strokes, achieving effects of remarkable finesse and precision. As documented in Count von der Schulenburg’s account books, published by Alice Binion in 1990, the print was produced in 1731, when the engraver was twenty-nine years old, and not in 1734, as indicated by Ravà and repeated in subsequent bibliographies.
