Dante. Dante, with commentary by Christoforo Landino and Alessandro Vellutello. Venice, Sessa, 1564. A famous and elegant edition known as the “Nasone” edition because of the distinctive portrait of Dante on the title page Dante. Dante with commentary by Christoforo Landino and Alessandro Vellutello. Venice, Sessa, 1564. Folio (310 x 215 mm); [28], 163, [4], 164–392 (i.e., 396) leaves. Title page with a portrait of the author and numerous woodcuts in the text (restorations on the title page, foxing on the first few leaves, reinforcement on leaf 8 with a small loss, waterstains, foxing, and spots.) Early 17th-century full parchment binding with a handwritten title on the spine (restorations and missing sections). Published by the Sessa family, this edition brings together the fundamental commentaries by Cristoforo Landino and Alessandro Vellutello, supplementing the text with Sansovino’s corrections. The illustrations follow those of the famous Marcolini edition of 1544, making this printing one of the most interesting and highly regarded examples of the 16th-century publishing tradition of the Divine Comedy. A fine edition known as the “Nasone” for the distinctive portrait of Dante on the title page
