Martial. *Martialis cum duobus comentis*. Milan, Scinzenzeler, 1505. Martial’s biting satire in a rare Milanese edition Martial. *Martialis cum duobus comentis*. Milan, Scinzenzeler, 1505. Folio (300 x 210 mm); CLVIII, [2] leaves. Woodcut printer’s mark on the title page, numerous wood-engraved initials (a few stains, minor restoration to the lower corner of the last leaf.) 17th-century full-parchment binding with a handwritten title on the upper cover (rather worn; endpapers reinforced with green cardboard.) A fascinating post-incunabulum edition of Martial’s *Epigrammata*, enriched by the humanistic commentaries of Domizio Calderini and Giorgio Merula, which accompany the famous verses of the Latin poet—a master of biting irony and satire capable of exposing the vices, ambitions, and hypocrisies of Roman society. Printed in Milan by Giovanni Angelo Scinzenzeler, one of the leading figures of Milan’s early printing industry, it bears witness to Martial’s enduring popularity in humanist culture. Not listed in Adams. Martial’s biting wit in a rare Milanese edition
