GOYEN, JAN VAN 1596 Leiden–1656 The Hague Title: River Landscape with Travelers. Date: 1653. Technique: Black chalk, gray wash on laid paper. Mounting: Partially mounted along the upper edge. Dimensions: 17 x 28 cm. Inscription: Monogrammed and dated lower left: vG 1653. Reverse: Pencil numbering in the upper left corner. Frame: Mat and framed. Provenance refers to the lineage of a work of art; if the discerning eye of a recognized connoisseur has deemed an object to be of high quality and has included it in and retained it in his or her own collection, this is a mark of distinction that elevates the work’s standing within the artist’s body of work as well as the value of the object itself. It is a true pleasure and honor to be able to offer works of art with such well-documented provenance. Here we now present four works from the magnificent collection of the Essen-based publisher Herbert Girardet, which he built up with great passion and with the assistance of art historians Eduard Plietzsch and Horst Gerson (who served for many years as director of the RKD in The Hague) beginning in the late 1950s. Herbert Girardet’s father and grandfather had already been collectors of the highest caliber, though they specialized in 19th-century painting. During a study visit to London, Herbert Girardet discovered his interest in the “Golden Age” of the Netherlands while visiting the city’s museums, and from that point on, he was committed to building a collection and continually enhancing its quality. In 1970, a large portion of this collection was presented to the public in a major exhibition at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum and the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen and documented in a catalog. In Jan von Goyen’s body of work, drawings hold a status as independent works of art comparable to that of his paintings. The artist, who was notoriously short on cash, was able to produce works on paper more cheaply and quickly and—albeit at a lower price—sell them more quickly as well. Catalog number 1132 features one such meticulously detailed drawing, depicting a scene of everyday life on the riverbank—a composition so typical of the artist.
