Pancrace BESSA (1772–1846) Madame Bessa, wife of the painter Écouen, circa July 1844 Daguerreotype, half-plate, vertical, image not straightened. Mounted on a white mat with an octagonal window, black frame. Mark 30 in a circle (title 1/30). 10 x 8 cm (visible area) Provenance House in Écouen; discovered about forty years ago along with two other plates from the same set. The painter’s wife, wearing a bonnet and lace collar with a bow under her chin, a checkered shawl, and her hands clasped, poses in front of a sheet draped with diagonal folds. This is the setting for the painter’s self-portrait and the three portraits of his son Louis-Maximilien dated July 20, 1844 (studio collection, Beaussant-Lefèvre, December 18, 2008).
