ROMANOFF, Marina. Princess Nenekedjân: A Crimean Tatar Legend. First edition of this superb facsimile, printed in a limited run and signed by Princess Marina Romanoff. Paris, Honoré Champion, 1926. In-4 (328 x 250 mm), loose-leaf, with a gold-embossed cover, illustrated on the front cover with black Mongolian calligraphy, in a black paper slipcase. 35 leaves, including the ornate title page printed on the front side only, and 4 plates. Slipcase rubbed with tears at the bottom. A superb facsimile of an epic poem entirely written, calligraphed, and illustrated by Princess Marina Petrovna of Russia (1906–1992), great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I, who fled the Russian Revolution in 1919. It is illustrated with 4 stencil-colored plates with gold and palladium highlights, as well as vignettes within the text. Limited edition of 126 copies; this is copy no. 65, signed by the author. This legend, inspired by Crimean Tatar folklore, recounts the fate of the magnificent Nenekedjân (Canike Hanım), daughter of the powerful Khan Tokhtamysh of the Golden Horde, Tamerlane’s great rival at the end of the 14th century. Near the cave fortress of Chufut-Kale, her mausoleum can still be visited today. Copy in excellent condition.
