[HERALDRY - PICARDY]. Excerpt from the Genealogy of the House of Mailly, followed by the history of the branch of the Counts of Mailly, Marquises of Haucourt, and that of the Marquises of Quesnoy. Compiled from the original documents, under the supervision of M. de Clairambault, Genealogist of the King’s Orders... An impressive first edition, in a contemporary binding, of this monumental monograph dedicated to one of the oldest and most illustrious houses of the Picard nobility. Paris, Ballard, 1757. Folio, full brown marbled calfskin, ribbed spine highlighted with a gilt roulette, panels adorned with gilt fleurs-de-lis, triple gilt fillet framing the covers and double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges. II - [4] ff. and 198 pp.; 215 pp.; 27 pp. 9 engraved titles, 2 large genealogical tables, one printed in red and black and the other engraved on copper by Fombonne, 5 engraved plates as inserts, 4 allegorical headpieces, and 27 headpieces depicting coats of arms, initials, and tailpieces. Binding scuffed with cracks at the joints, cap bands missing, corners worn, two small tears at the folds of the first table, four stains on the second, a tear in the side margin of p. 77, foxing, and some water stains. First edition of this monumental monograph, printed on heavy paper at the family’s exclusive expense. Father Simplicien (Paul Lucas, 1683–1759) traces the history of the prestigious Picardy family and its various branches dating back to Anselme de Mailly (1050–1070). The work was meticulously compiled based on authentic documents validated by Clairambault, the official genealogist of the King’s Orders. The final section, presented as a separate paginated section, includes all the “original titles serving as evidence for this work.” Provenance: - The Tillette family of Clermont-Tonnerre, one of the oldest lineages of the nobility of the robe in Abbeville, Picardy (engraved bookplate) - Bonnault Library (engraved bookplate). - Heraldic Society. Engraved bookplate (with number) and notation at the bottom of the spine. A fine copy.
