Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1863. In-8, red half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gold garlands. Later binding. 2 unnumbered folios (half-title, title), 474 pp., 1 unnumbered folio (table of contents). Browned half-title page, some foxing. First edition. Copy from the first printing (approximately 3,000 copies). Following his intimate realism and the scandal of *Madame Bovary*, Gustave Flaubert wrote a second historical novel brimming with exoticism, in which he brings to life the terrible War of the Mercenaries. A fine copy.
