Car pennant from the U.S. Ambassador to Poland. Double-sided cotton pennant bearing the official emblem of the United States surrounded by stars. It features a single strap for attaching it to the flagpole. Dimensions: 20 × 30 cm. This model was intended for Ambassador Anthony Biddle, U.S. Ambassador to Poland from 1937 to 1943. Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle Jr. (December 17, 1897 – November 13, 1961) was an American diplomat, businessman, and Major General in the United States Army. Born into a prominent Philadelphia family, he distinguished himself during World War II by being accredited simultaneously to an exceptional number of European governments in exile. Stationed in Warsaw during Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in September 1939, he evacuated the country under bombardment along with the embassy staff. Once settled in London, he was accredited simultaneously to eight governments-in-exile: Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Greece, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Luxembourg. This made him one of the American diplomats to have simultaneously represented the largest number of foreign governments. In 1944, he temporarily left the State Department to return to active duty in the military. He joined General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s staff at SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force), where he was responsible, among other things, for relations with the liberated European armed forces. Note some wear and a patina from use. Condition II+. Former pennant of the United States Ambassador to Poland. Double-sided cotton pennant bearing the official emblem of the United States surrounded by stars. Only one fastening strap for attachment to the flagstaff remains. Dimensions: 20 × 30 cm.
