1899 - RAF pilot's whistle from a Stalag. Metal whistle, still in working condition. Lanyard ring present. Manufactured by The Acme, Made in England. According to the seller, this whistle was found in Stalag LUFT III ZAGAN. Established in May 1942, east of Stalag VIII C and 160 km southeast of Berlin, Stalag Luft III was located near Zagan, in Prussian Lower Silesia, and was under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Luftwaffe. The site was chosen because the sandy soil was believed to make excavation difficult for prisoners attempting to escape through underground tunnels. The prisoners were mainly British and American airmen, but prisoners of other nationalities were also recorded there—French, Belgians, Canadians, Dutch, Greeks, Norwegians, Lithuanians, Slovaks, Czechs, Polish, as well as pilots from New Zealand, Australia, and the Republic of South Africa. It is estimated that by early 1944, the number of detainees had risen to more than 10,500 prisoners. Please note some wear and patina on the item. Condition II+. RAF Pilot’s Whistle Recovered from Stalag Luft III POW Camp. Metal whistle, still functional. Suspension ring present. Manufactured by The Acme, marked “Made in England.” According to information provided by the seller, this whistle was recovered from Stalag Luft III in Zagan. Established in May 1942, east of Stalag VIII C and 160 km southeast of Berlin, Stalag Luft III was located near Zagan, in Prussian Lower Silesia, and was operated exclusively by the Luftwaffe. The site was chosen because its sandy soil was believed to make digging difficult for prisoners attempting to escape through underground tunnels. The prisoners were mainly British and American airmen, although prisoners of other nationalities were also held there, including French, Belgian, Canadian, Dutch, Greek, Norwegian, Lithuanian, Slovak, Czech, and Polish servicemen, as well as airmen from New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. By early 1944, the camp is estimated to have held more than 10,500 prisoners. The item shows some wear and age-related patina. Condition II+.
