Scarab; Egypt, Late Period – Ptolemaic Period, 664–30 B.C. Stone. Measurements: 2.5 cm in length Provenance: Family bequest from Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Archaeological collection assembled beginning in the 1950s by successive generations of the family through purchases at European galleries and auction houses. It previously belonged to a private collection in Barcelona, acquired in 1980. The scarab was an amulet symbolizing life and power, shaped like a dung beetle—an animal associated with Khepri, the self-created god of the rising sun. It is the most common type of amulet from Ancient Egypt.
