Based on works by JUAN CLARÀ I AYATS (Olot, Girona, 1875 – Paris, 1958). “Girl” Alabaster. Measurements: 33 x 17 cm. Provenance: Estate of Ramon Martí Alsina and Ricard Martí Aguiló. Artistic and heritage collection originating in the legacy of Catalan painters Ramon Martí Alsina (1826–1894), a seminal figure of 19th-century Catalan Realism, and his son Ricard Martí Aguiló (1857–1935). Passed down and enriched across successive generations, the collection brings together works from the original holdings of both artists alongside acquisitions made by their descendants. Dedicated to preserving and recovering the family legacy, the descendants actively reacquired works by the painters as they entered the market, progressively expanding the collection to encompass paintings, sculptures, archaeological artifacts, and other items of artistic and historical significance. Sculpture of a child figure made of alabaster, based on models by Joan Clarà i Ayats, a prominent Catalan sculptor associated with the renewal of figurative sculpture in the early 20th century. His work is characterized by sensitivity in the treatment of the human figure, the refinement of forms, and the pursuit of a serene and natural expression. The choice of alabaster—a material with delicate translucency and tactile qualities—is particularly well-suited for depicting childhood, as it allows for the gentle nuancing of features and lends the surface a distinctive luminosity. The work is part of the tradition of figurative sculpture inspired by Modernism and the Novecent movement, in which the idealization of the figure and formal harmony play a central role. Education. Juan Clarà i Ayats (Olot, 1875 – Paris, 1958) initially trained at the School of Fine Arts in Olot, where he was a student of Josep Berga i Boix. He later continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse and in Paris, where he pursued his professional career as a sculptor.
