Penck, attributed, portrait of a woman facing right young woman with a gaze wandering into the distance, partly impasto portrait painting in shades of black and grey, opaque paints on cardboard (back of a notepad), circa 1970-80, unsigned, small holes in the corners from previous mounting, in an unframed picture support, dimensions approx. 30 x 20 cm. Provenance: Collection of the artist and friend of A. R. Penck, Klaus Liebscher/Radebeul (also featured in the film ‘Er nannte sich Y’). Artist information: real name Ralf Winkler, also used the pseudonyms ‘Mike Hammer’, ‘T.M.’, ‘Mickey Spilane’, ‘a.Y.’ or ‘Y’; German painter, graphic artist and object artist (1939 Dresden - 2017 Zurich); 1953-54: studied painting and drawing under Jürgen Böttcher (Strawalde); from 1956, the artist applied four times, unsuccessfully, to the art academies in Dresden and Berlin; 1955-56: apprenticeship as a draughtsman at DEWAG; after abandoning the apprenticeship, worked in various professions; in 1966, admitted as a candidate for the VBK of the GDR and renamed ‘A. R. Penck’, In 1971, he became a member of the ‘Künstlergruppe Lücke’, In 1976, he met Jörg Immendorff; from this time onwards, he campaigned for the abolition of the inner-German border; in 1980, he was expatriated from the GDR; in 1981, he was awarded the Rembrandt Prize by the Goethe Foundation in Basel, 1983: Moved to London; 1988: Appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy; has lived in Dublin since 2003; participated in documenta 5, 7 and 9; Source: Wikipedia and the internet.
