4453 - V. R. Matalony, Lake at Sunset

V. R. Matalony, Lake at Sunset On the left, on a jetty, a stone sculpture of a couple in love, entwined by ivy; on the right, bluish undergrowth reaching into the water; the horizon coloured by the evening sun into a sea of red and orange; vibrant colours, a slightly impastoed style of painting; the manner of depiction-featuring a sculpture and a pond at sunset, drawn from nature-can be traced primarily to the Spanish artist Enrique Serra y Auque; in Germany, similar sunsets set against a ruined landscape can be found, for example, in the works of Ferdinand Knab, oil on canvas, signed ‘V. R. Matalony’ lower left, minimally restored, minor imperfections, stretcher frame slightly bumped, inner dimensions 83.5 x 129.5 cm.
