Wilhelm Legler, Large Tree Landscape several imposing, intertwined deciduous trees in park-like surroundings; a work typical of the artist, featuring a large, dominant group of trees at the centre, painted in a slightly impasto style with a cheerful colour palette, oil on canvas, signed and dated ‘W. Legler 1937’ in each of the two lower corners, handwritten inscription on the reverse of the stretcher: ‘W. Legler Wien Künstlerhaus”, typographically labelled “1937/1062” and “1938/954”, label on frame reading “Hermann Heine, Hannover...”, slight signs of ageing, framed, inner dimensions approx. 91 x 100 cm. Artist’s biography: Austrian painter (1875, Pisino, Croatia - 1951, Stillfried, Austria), studied from 1871 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Carl Moll and from 1899 to 1906 in Stuttgart under Leopold von Kalckreuth and Adolf Hölzel, from 1914 a member of the Vienna Secession, a member of the Imperial Chamber of Fine Arts, featured on several occasions at the Great German Art Exhibition; his body of work up to that point was destroyed during a bombing raid on Vienna; represented in several museums and collections, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer and Wikipedia.
