The present lot, bound in a gilt-tooled green leather album, is a 20th-century series of architectural studies depicting India's most iconic monuments. Many of these views appear to be after the renowned painter Ghulam 'Ali Khan, one of the foremost painters in Delhi in the first half of the 19th century, employed by the royal households of both Akbar II (reg. 1806-37) and Bahadur Shah II. As this album dates from the 20th century, its paintings could be called 'revival', as they refer to a later resurgence in the production of architectural studies produced by Indian artists working for British civil servants, military officers, surveyors and travellers during the period of the East India Company (circa 1770-1850). Earlier works documented India's architecture, landscapes, monuments, people and daily life at a time when photography had yet to become widespread. Later works often revisited the most iconic views of India's celebrated landmarks. This example retains much of the meticulous detail and precision of the earlier tradition while embracing a more decorative aesthetic, better suited for the expanding tourist market of the 20th century. Condition Report: The binding of the album restored.
