Three Chinese export famille rose plates, 18th century, comprising: one armorial, painted with a coat of arms possibly belonging to the Aguado de Las Marismas family, of a shield with a black bird standing beneath a gilt crescent, surmounted by a coronet and supported by two greyhounds, the motto reading 'NIGRA SUM SED', enclosed by a floral swag border, and two centred with an intertwined gilt monogram, possibly 'GB', enclosed by sprays of blossoming peony in en grisaille and gilt (22.5 to 32cm diameter) (3) Provenance: The Private Collection of Michael George Kuczynski (1941-2025), Cambridgeshire. Footnote: The Aguado de Las Marismas family established their prominence in France during the early 19th century, led by its most notable figure, Alexandre-José-Marie-Léon-Paul-Raymond-Louis de Gonzague Aguado (Séville 1785 - Gijon 1842). Aguado served as a colonel and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Dalmatia (Marshal Soult) in 1810, before transitioning to financial prominence as a court banker for Spain between 1815 and 1830. In recognition of his financial services, King Ferdinand VII of Spain granted him the title of Marquis de Las Marismas del Guadalquivir in 1829. Shortly thereafter, in 1830, he became a naturalised French citizen and was elected Mayor of Ivry-sur-Seine. His arms were quarterly and feature a distinct second quarter divided per fess, displaying a silver (argent) field charged with a black (sable) bucket in chief and a red (gules) cormorant in base. This service was likely commissioned earlier in the 18th century by an older relative, such as Alexandre's maternal uncle. Pieces from this service were published by Cohen & Cohen and illustrated by Antoine Lebel in 'French and Swiss Armorials on Chinese Export Porcelain of the 18th Century', 2009, p. 237.
