Eucharistic Crucifixion scene Depiction of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha, surrounded by hovering angels, with his grieving mother Mary and his beloved disciple John at the foot of the cross; the scene depicts the moment of Jesus’ death, as recounted in the Gospel of Luke: ‘...’ It was already about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour; the sun lost its brightness, and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus cried out with a loud voice: ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit!’ And when he had said this, he breathed his last. …”, whilst Jesus breathed his last, as depicted in the painting, the two angels began to collect the blood from Christ’s wounds into bowls - a popular Renaissance motif intended to commemorate Jesus’s blood sacrifice; glazed religious genre painting, oil on an irregularly shaped, hand-embossed brass plate, probably 17th century, unsigned, signs of age, unframed, probably an old mounting hole in the top centre, plate dimensions approx. 30.5 x 23 cm.
