3468 - Karl Kemedinger, Striding Lion

Karl Kemedinger, Striding Lion c. 1925, signed on the plinth, manufacturer’s mark ‘EIM’ within a circle for Edgar Mertens Ilmenau, terracotta, painted dark brown and black; an imposing male lion strolling on a long rectangular plinth with a textured surface; minor loss of colour; L 55 cm. Artist’s biography: German porcelain designer, sculptor and painter (1897 Erdberg/South Moravia - 1964 Ilmenau), after attending secondary school, he studied at the State Technical College for the Ceramics Industry in Znaim; following the First World War and stints in Dresden and Magdeburg, he eventually settled in Thuringia, where he worked for many years as a modeller and designer for the Graf von Henneberg porcelain factory in Ilmenau, He also created designs for other renowned manufacturers such as Metzler & Ortloff, specialising in expressive animal sculptures (including big cats), athletic figures in terracotta, as well as reliefs and paintings.
