FRANÇOIS IV GONZAGUE, DUKE OF MANTOVA AND MONTFERRAT (1586–1612) Bust portrait facing right, clad in armor, the armor richly decorated, wearing a ruff and a sash. Signature and date on the edge of the bust: “G• DVPRE•F•1612.” On the reverse, in relief, the date and name of the founder: “J•B•KELLER•1654.” Patinated and chiseled bronze medal, single-sided with a suspension ring. Diameter: 16 cm References: Mazerolle II 668; Kress 561. Guillaume Dupré (1576–1643), appointed chief sculptor to King Henry IV in 1611 and later controller of hallmarks and coins for France, was one of the most renowned medalists of the Ancien Régime. The Keller brothers (Jean-Jacques and Jean-Balthasar) were famous Swiss goldsmiths and casters. Having settled in Paris at Colbert’s suggestion, they took over the Dupré foundry at the Arsenal in 1654. Similar pieces cast by the Kellers are found in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Mazerolle mentions a piece in the collection of Queen Christina of Sweden.
