CHAUVEAU, François (1613–1676), engraver Shell and Rocaille Chandeliers in the Grotto at Versailles Antique engraving, framed under glass 40 x 29 cm (viewable size of the print) 55.5 x 44.5 cm with carved and gilded wooden frame Pinholes A leading figure in 17th-century French engraving, François Chauveau displayed a boundless imagination, producing more than 1,400 compositions. Admitted to the Academy in 1663, he worked on prestigious royal commissions, notably the plates for the Grotto of Versailles, which was constructed under Louis XIV beginning in 1664. These seashell candlesticks exemplify the refinement and whimsy of the decor in the Grotte de Thétis, a masterpiece of Versailles ornamentation, where marine inspiration blends with the decorative arts of the court.
