A 98k carbine, "war model," code "byf," 1944 Cal. 8x57JS, No. 88539I; the number matches on the cartridge case and the breech; other parts are unnumbered. Polished barrel. Five-round capacity. Cartridge case head marked “byf 44,” “Mod. 98” on the side of the guide. Manufactured by Mauser-Werke Oberndorf. Military proof and acceptance marks: eagle/“WaA135.” Metal parts have been reworked and refurbished. Laminated wood stock has been stripped and refurbished. Buttplate with a hole to replace the stamp plate. Bayonet mount and cleaning rod are missing on the wartime model. Both rings are made of stamped sheet metal, secured with two screws. Front sight guard.
