Three Japanese lacquer boxes, Japan, probably late 19th/early 20th century Set of three lacquer boxes on a wooden base. 1) Box with a black background; lid featuring a scene with four figures: women in Chinese attire standing by a planted water basin with a dipper, set in a landscape; decoration in gold, silver, and red; metal push button. Lid shows scratches, scuffs, and age-related craquelure; lacquer chipping at one corner; reddish residue on the underside. Dimensions approx. 2.7 × 12 × 8 cm. 2) Oblong box, reddish-brown base lacquer, lid panel featuring a songbird, flowers, and a fence (kachō motif) on a scattered-paint background; marked and stamped lower left; key lock; interior surfaces with gold-sprinkled decoration. Scratches, lacquer chips on edges and corners, traces of label printing on the upper left, corroded hardware, hinges likely replaced. Dimensions approx. 5.2 × 28.3 × 8.5 cm. 3) Large, elongated casket, red ground lacquer, frame strip with a gold wavy band, lid with three shell-shaped gold reserves among cherry and, presumably, plum blossoms in silver and orange; key lock; interior surfaces with a nashiji-style gold-sprinkled ground. Scratches and isolated lacquer chips, especially along the edges; discoloration from a label on the lid; remnants of a label on the underside along with a crack showing raised lacquer; deposits in places on the interior bottom; hinges and clasp likely restored.
