GIONO (Jean), 1895–1970. Autograph letter signed “Jean Giono,” undated [March 22, 1951, according to a handwritten note in another hand], 1 p., in-4, to the writer Armand Lanoux (1913–1983). Small tears along the margins. In it, Giono thanks Lanoux for his complimentary letter and reflects on his solitude as a writer: “Working all alone, you know, far from the ‘pundits’ who shape public opinion, is, on certain evenings, despairing.” He invites him to come visit him in Manosque and says he will read Lanoux’s novel *La Classe du matin* “with joy.” As for himself, he is in the process of finishing *Le Hussard sur le toit*; “I think the ending is better. You give me new strength.”" Enclosed are a letter and three autographed cards signed “Jean Giono” addressed to various recipients: - Autograph letter signed “Jean Giono,” Manosque, November 29, 1969, ½ p., in-8: “The journalists have greatly exaggerated. It was simply a moment of unease in an overheated atmosphere [...]” - Autograph postcard signed “Jean Giono,” Manosque, undated: “Dear friend, of course—here is my signature. If it were a bullet, they’d already be dead.” - C.A.S. “Jean Giono,” no date, “Our best regards to both of you” (greeting card) - C.A.S. “Jean Giono,” no date “Merry Christmas” [“and Happy New Year” in another hand, probably his wife’s] - Obituary notice for the writer - Letter to the Editor from Bernard Degioanni, Marseille, June 12, 1973, asking a writer who is a member of the Académie Française for a piece on Giono on the occasion of the third anniversary of his death.
