Céline and his wife thought their friends had left for Rome, and now they’ve received “this magnificent array of illustrated magazines from the South! What a stroke of luck! Life was just getting a little dull and sedate! Now here’s something exciting! Lucette is crazy about the humor sections. All in all, as you can see, we’re not having a hard time—we’re just bored knowing you’re far away and not coming back anytime soon. Here it’s mild and gray—stubbornly so—and it’s raining, too, but gently. It seems everyone is talking about nothing but going on vacation. The automobile is killing France, ruining it. It’s drunk on gas and debt [...] Cockroaches run amok!"
