United Kingdom - MENTET DE SALMONET (R.) & RIORDAN DE MUSCRY (D.). History of the Troubles in Great Britain, Covering Events from the Year 1633 to the Year 1646. [Following this:] An Account of the True Causes and Favorable Circumstances That Contributed to the Restoration of the King of Great Britain. Paris, Courbé, 1661. 3 parts bound in 1 folio volume, root-tanned sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, black title label, gold fillet and garland framing the covers with a gold-stamped Jesuit emblem in the center, gilt edges (19th-century binding). A few scuffs on the leather. A few slight, faint water stains. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece portrait by Mignard (missing here), three vignettes on the title pages, a beautiful header, and a copper-engraved initial, as well as numerous wood-engraved headers, initials, and tailpieces. The cherubs in the title mark of Volume I have been “restored” with ink. Posthumous edition, expanded to include a previously unpublished second part published by Jacques Saint Clair de Roselin based on the author’s manuscript, as well as a third part entitled “Account of the True Causes and Favorable Circumstances That Contributed to the Restoration of the King of Great Britain” by Riordan de Muscry. As secretary to Cardinal de Retz, the Scotsman Mentet de Salmonet was tasked at the outset of the Fronde with writing and printing a history of the recent revolutions in England in order to chart a course of action amid the looming unrest in Paris. Here, he provides a chronicle covering the period from 1633 to 1646 in Great Britain during the reign of Charles I and the civil war that pitted the Royalists against the Puritans led by Oliver Cromwell.
