A three-quarter-length portrait of the famous French marshal in armor, wearing a large allonge wig. A red sash across the chest; the Star of the Order of the Holy Spirit on his cloak. Restored, re-varnished; major retouching on the right hand, forehead, and hair. In a wooden stretcher frame. Painting dimensions 119 x 86 cm; with frame 134 x 102 cm. Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars, Prince of Martigues, Marquis and Duke of Villars, and Viscount of Melun (1653–1734), Marshal of France, was one of the most famous military commanders in French history. He played a key role in numerous campaigns during the War of the Bavarian Succession and the War of the Spanish Succession. Condition: II -
