ALFRED ENKE 1852–1937 Pictorialism, Woman with a Flower, ca. 1899–1902. Photograph: Original silver print mounted on fabric. Image: 25.5 x 32.7 cm; mount: 52 x 63.5 cm Enke was one of the few wealthy amateurs to adopt the new Pictorialist style in Germany around 1890. His privileged family background allowed him to pursue a creative process free from any material constraints. This situation explains his independence. However, he appears to have exhibited in England in the early years of the 20th century. His work was praised by leading publications such as the prestigious magazine *The Amateur Photographer*, which devoted an article to him in 1903, describing him as a “remarkable pictorialist photographer.” Bibliography: “Alfred Enke, a notable pictorial photographer,” *The Amateur Photographer*, Vol. XXXVIII, No. 985, August 20, 1903, p. 145.
