Qur'an.- Qur'an (Somalian) Qur’an manuscript from Somalia, [Section from the Qur’an comprising 7:171 - 14:25], Arabic manuscript on paper written as a undivided text without verse markers in majuscule script, previous owners inscriptions, endpapers renewed, some worm holes to text, all remaining legible, original binding repaired and restored, short split to front flap, 8vo, Algoi, c.1900. *** A Qur’an section, written by an unnamed holy man in the town of Algoi (near Mogadishu) in the late 19th or early 20th-century. The text is presented as a stark, Majuscule scripted continuous block, intended for a reader so familiar with the Qur’an that verse markers are unnecessary. Two Italian inscriptions at the end of the manuscript provide details on its provenance and production. Acquired in 1911 by Dr Carlo Bottari, a Italian medical officer stationed at the residency in the port of Merca, then part of colonial Italian Somaliland. A second inscription in his hand records its presentation in 1912. Bottari crucially notes that the Qur’an came from the town of Algio and that it was copied by a local holy man, locating this manuscript’s production firmly in Somalia.
