Authors such as Angela Carter, C.S. Lewis and Alan Garner have noted the influence of Masefield's children's books on their writing. The print-run for The Box of Delights was only half that of the first book in the series The Midnight Folk rendering it comparatively scarce in the dust-jacket in good condition.
