Munich Synagogue.- Métivier (Jean Baptiste) Grund-Plaene, Durchschnitte und Façaden nebst einigen Details der Synagoge in München erbaut im Jahre 1824/25, only edition, 12 lithographed plates and plans (a few with foxing), with an additional suite of plates on Whatman paper and with fine hand-colouring, contemporary glazed red boards with gilt border, spine gilt, g.e., with original printed blue wrappers bound in, light spotting to boards, a little rubbed at edges, spine slightly faded, folio, Munich, J.M.Herrmann, [c.1825]. *** A lovely and probably unique copy of this scarce description of the first synagogue in Munich, for presentation to the royal house of Bavaria, specially bound and with an additional set of hand-coloured plates. The delicate washes and colouring give the original line drawings a much more three-dimensional quality, as if they were original drawings. During the Napoleonic Wars the number of Jews in Munich had increased and in 1824 a permit was issued for the construction of a synagogue. Jean Baptiste Métivier (1781-1857) was royal building inspector who designed many palaces for the nobility. He favoured a neoclassical style for the building in the hope that it would serve as a model for future synagogues in Bavaria but subsequent ones were built in a more oriental style. The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938 during Kristallnacht. Provenance: From the Wittelsbach library of the Dukes and Kings of Bavaria.
