Shelley (Percy Bysshe) Adonais. An Elegy on the Death of John Keats, Author of Endymion, Hyperion, etc., first edition, small mark to front free endpaper, neat tape strengthening to upper hinge, original blue wrappers with decorative printed border around a basket of fruit, uncut, lacking backstrip, some glue residue to spine, very light toning to covers, small patch of chipping to foot of upper cover, some light corner creasing, a few small nicks or chip to lower fore-edge, an excellent example overall, 4to, Pisa, with the types of Didot, 1821. *** First edition in original wrappers of Shelley's elegy on the death of Keats, one of his best and best-known works and the only poem to have a second edition in his lifetime. Shelley considered Adonais the "least imperfect" of his poems and oversaw the printing himself. In the preface he attacked the critics of the Quarterly Review who had lambasted Keats' Endymion, claiming that their negative reviews had "produced the most violent effect on his susceptible mind; the agitation thus originated ended in the rupture of a blood-vessel in the lungs".
