James II (King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1633-1701) Royal warrant signed concerning the New Forest Account, D.s. "James R" at head, manuscript in English, on paper, 1p. with conjugate blank, and 2 notes signed by Laurence Hyde, first Earl of Rochester, a few tears and holes, some with repairs, margins torn with loss (affecting text at times), scattered staining, approx. 350 x 230 mm., 1685. *** The order for payment to Sir John James of £1,599 15s. 2d., being the balance of £29,099 15s. 2d. due on the principal account of the New Forest, is signed in the margin by Sidney Godolphin (1645–1712), 1st Earl of Godolphin and later Lord High Treasurer; John Ernle (1620–1697), Chancellor of the Exchequer; Stephen Fox (1627–1716), Paymaster of the Forces; Dudley North (1641–1691), merchant, politician and economist; and Henry Frederick Thynne (1644–1705), Clerk of the Privy Council. It is further signed at the foot by Robert Howard (1626–1698), playwright and politician who supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War. Also comprising a warrant addressed to the Lord High Treasurer, explaining that £500 remained due under the original order and could not be paid to Sir John James following the death of Charles II without further royal authority. The warrant confirms the King’s pleasure that the outstanding sum be paid and is countersigned twice at the foot by Laurence Hyde (1642–1711), 1st Earl of Rochester, statesman and writer, uncle of Queen Anne and initially a supporter of James II, before later supporting the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
