"Kunst" inscribed in pencil on the upper margin of the reverse, above the handwritten label in brown ink: "Charcoal sketch by Mancini, Italian painter / From the H. W. Mesdag Collection. This and numerous other sketches, crumpled up, served as packaging for the paintings purchased by Mesdag / by Mancini.” Provenance: H.W. Mesdag Collection, The Hague; Dutch private collection. In 1898, Maison Artz, a Dutch gallery founded in 1893, brought seventeen pastels and paintings from the Mesdag collection to various exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Mesdag himself subsequently exhibited seven charcoal drawings at the Venice Biennale in 1907. Mancini’s pastels focused primarily on the nude and portraiture. It is known that the artist frequently attended the Nude Academy in Rome, at the Circolo Artistico Internazionale on Via Margutta; there he produced a vast number of works, and over 160 of these found their way to the Netherlands. The same paper can be identified in most similar nudes that have appeared on the market.
