Max Klinger, Intermezzi - Opus IV. 1881. A marvelous portfolio of 12 etchings and aquatints, finely engraved on mounted China paper. 415x287 mm each. Sheets: 630x450 mm each. Contained in an original publisher’s folder made of cardboard reinforced with leather on the spine and corners, with a title page and table of contents embossed on the front cover. Folder dimensions: 640x455 mm. Singer, 52/63. Each plate bears “MAX KLINGER” in the lower left margin and the plate number stamped in the lower right margin. The portfolio does not appear to follow a linear narrative thread; only the last sheet, *Amor Tod und Jenseits* (*Love, Death, and the Afterlife*), suggests a possible theme for reflection: a satirical contest among the sufferings of humanity. (1) Each sheet has wide margins with negligible, sporadic discoloration and creases. The work is, overall, perfectly preserved with excellent ink quality.
