375 - Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, Set of 3 engravings from the Exodus series. 1914–15. Collection of 3 lithographs on paper. 310/340 x 180/515 mm. Sheets: 383/565 x 280/580 mm. Each signed on the plate; one dated on the plate. Two are countersigned in pencil and numbered. One copy is printed on fine Japanese paper. Steinlen, who moved to Paris from Brussels in 1881, was concerned throughout his life with the plight of the working class and marginalized populations. The theme of displaced people often appears in his war-related works. Between 1914 and 1915, nearly 200,000 refugees fled Belgium; these prints depict an exodus following a German attack. A stoic mother holding a newborn in her arms leads a sea of children. Individualized figures in the foreground give way to faceless figures in the background, as Steinlen suggests with swift, sweeping lines that blend into the vast horizon. (3) Excellent overall condition.
