Adolfo De Carolis, Dante Adriacus. 1920. Two-block woodcut. 910x600 mm. Sheet: 990x685 mm. Conti, 1929, plate II. Orano-Di Marzio, 1929, p. 5. Inscriptions: “To him MCCCXXI—Adolfo De Carolis engraved MCMXX.” Created for the sixth centenary of Dante’s death, two versions exist: one titled *Dante Alighieri* and one *Dante Adriacus*. The second, modified version was commissioned by D’Annunzio. Dante is depicted in a frontal, half-length portrait, gazing straight ahead with his head crowned with laurel, having just finished writing the Divine Comedy. His hands are crossed over the final verses of the Third Canto. In the foreground, on the writing desk, are two other books: the *Convivio*, to the poet’s right, and the *Vita Nova*, to his left. In the background, three arches frame the scene, symbolizing the three canticles: the one on the left, shrouded in darkness, represents Hell; the central one, obscured by the poet’s face, Purgatory, and the one on the right, bathed in light and featuring a lit lamp (a symbol of Wisdom), represents Paradise. (1) Slight overall browning. Defects and small tears along the margins. The engraving is in good condition.
