286 - Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, *Yasurawade, nenamashi mono o, sayo fukete, katabuku made no, tsuki o mishi kana* (I wish I had gone to bed right away, but now the night has passed and I watch the moon as it sets). 1887. Color woodblock print (nishiki-e). Format: ôban tate-e (370x250 mm). Signature: Yoshitoshi. Publisher: Akiyama Buemon (Kokkeido). Woodcutter: Horiko Enkatsu. Seals: Taiso, Choko Enkatsu. Date: 1887. Series: Tsuki no hyakushi (The Hundred Faces of the Moon). The title references a poem by the poet Akazome Emon (956–1041), who lived during the Heian period. Written after a sleepless night, the poem describes the disappointment of a woman gazing at the moon while waiting for a lover who never arrived. The woman is depicted in the fashion of the Heian aristocracy: her eyebrows are shaved and redrawn on her forehead to resemble the antennae of a silkworm. In the date in the left margin, the year and month are missing; only the sixth day is indicated. The style of the signature is very similar to that of other works in the same series dated 1887; it is therefore likely that this print was published on the sixth day of the first month of 1887. (1) Fresh colors. Excellent condition.
