Inadome Sukenao (also known as Inadome Ichimu or Inatomi Ichimu) [by], *Meate no okite* (Rules for Targets). 19th century. *Orihon* volume (107x250 mm when closed). Provenance: from the collection of a diplomat stationed in the East from 1907 to 1931. Covered in golden-yellow damask silk. Thick, silky, glossy paper. Bamboo pen and India ink, colored pigments, and gold on paper. A fine copy comprising 80 double-page spreads of a hojutsu sho (shooting manual), with color illustrations and captions, bound in an accordion-style format, titled *Meate no okite* (Rules for Targets), from an eleven-volume series titled *Ichiryu Ippen no sho*, written by Inadome or Inatomi Ichimu. The manual illustrates the aiming points for targets and explains variations based on the shooter’s distance and direction. The targets depicted include a wide range of subjects: birds, insects, animals, arrows, grass, a warrior, clouds, rocks, and shrubs, rendered in the style of the Kano school, the official style in the service of the military clans and the shogunate. It appears that the work was never printed but was copied multiple times over several generations. The author was a military engineer and commander during the Sengoku period (the Warring States period, 1467–1603); he served the Isshiki clan as a high-ranking vassal and later served under Hosokawa Tadaoki. He learned artillery techniques from his grandfather, Inadome Sukehide, and later founded the artillery school bearing his family’s name. Finally, he served as an artillery instructor under the Tokugawa shogunate. (1) Very slight signs of wear limited to the cloth cover.
