China, Qing Dynasty, Jifu court robe. 1880–1910. The term “jifu” refers to the semi-formal ceremonial robe of the court, also known as the “dragon robe” due to the intricate decorative motifs that typically adorned it.A long robe, likely intended for summer wear, as it is made of dark blue, loosely woven fabric and is unlined. Embroidery in light blue, white, yellow, and gold thread. On the front and back, three five-clawed dragons (typical of high-ranking attire) chase flaming pearls; in the background are motifs of the eight precious treasures, ruyi clouds, and other auspicious symbols. At the bottom is a wide ruffle with diagonal lines representing the deep ocean (lishui); rocks emerge from the waves above, positioned at the four cardinal points to symbolize the stability of the Earth. On the shoulders of the robe are two more five-clawed dragons embroidered in gold. Around the neck and along the placket, a border with white, blue, and gold embroidery depicting dragons and bats on a black background. Five round gold buttons with decorative motifs. There is a long slit down the center of the front and back. Dimensions: length 140 cm (from collar to hem), width 220 cm (from cuff to cuff). (1) Slight signs of wear.
