It depicts settlements perched on hills, river valleys, and broad landforms shown in profile. Major towns such as Siena, Montalcino, and Pienza are recognizable. A text box, located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, cites classical sources, noting that the waters off Monte Argentario have been renowned since antiquity for tuna fishing. The upper-right quadrant features a detailed map of Corsica, showing its rugged, mountainous interior and numerous coastal settlements—including Bastia, Ajaccio, and Bonifacio. The lower-right map depicts the Marca of Ancona, bounded by the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. This section includes the region’s coat of arms, depicting a bent arm holding a weapon, as well as a dense network of cities such as Ancona, Loreto, Macerata, and Fermo. The map of Ancona bears the engraved date of 1572, indicating when the plate was created prior to its inclusion in subsequent editions of the atlas.
