The plate was originally included in Martin Zeiler, *Itinerarium Italiae nov-antiquae: oder, Raiss-Beschreibung durch Italien*. Frankfurt: Matthäus Merian, 1640; and in some editions of Johann Ludwig Gottfried, *Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica, das ist Beschreibung aller Käyserthumben, Königreichen und Republicken der gantzen Welt*. Frankfurt am Main: Wolfgang Hoffmans, 1638; and finally in *Topographia Italiae, Das ist: Warhaffte und Curiöse Beschreibung Von gantz Italien*... Frankfurt, 1688. The *Topographia* series, launched by Matthäus Merian the Elder and continued by his sons after his death, represents one of the most ambitious publishing ventures of the 17th century. The volumes combined the texts of Martin Zeiller—a humanist and geographer—with engravings produced in Merian’s workshop, creating richly illustrated geographical compendia that covered much of Europe. (1) Sheet with wide margins, likely as originally intended, mounted at the top within a modern cardboard mount. Trace of a vertical fold in the center with a few reinforced spots on the reverse.
