Federico Fantozzi, Geometric Map of Florence on a Scale of 1:4,500. Florence, [Tipografia Galileiana] – printed by Galileiana, [1841] 1843. Copper or steel engraving. 910x815 mm. Historical map of Florence engraved by Giacinto Maina (Dalmatia, 1772 – Milan or Cremona, approximately 1860), based on cadastral maps, featuring fine, crisp lines and a wealth of topographical detail. The city is depicted within a circle, with allegorical figures at the corners: Minerva and Tuscany at the top, and the Arno River at the bottom. A renowned scholar of Florentine history and architecture, Fantozzi devoted himself for many years to surveying the city’s neighborhoods and studying historical documents concerning its major buildings. In 1842, he published *Nuova guida ovvero descrizione storico-artistico-critica della città e contorni di Firenze* (New Guide, or Historical, Artistic, and Critical Description of the City and Surroundings of Florence), which was reprinted numerous times in the following years. In 1841, Fantozzi had already published (presumably in a limited number of copies) *The Geometric Map of the City of Florence on a Scale of 1:4,500, Surveyed from Life and Accompanied by Historical Annotations*, later republished in 1843, which forms the original core of his work. Due to the large amount of historical and architectural data he had collected, in 1843 Fantozzi decided to abandon the map model he had previously presented to the Grand Duke and to publish all the information in a separate booklet to which the map would be attached. In 1844, the map was used to illustrate, with a light blue shading, the extent of the Arno River’s flooding; subsequently, in 1866, it was used to publicize the expansion plan prepared by Giuseppe Poggi for Florence, the new capital of the Kingdom of Italy. (1) Copy mounted on paper backing, with some restoration and minor imperfections. In a beautiful period gilt frame. With frame: 107.5 x 95 cm.
