A beautiful map of Europe, depicted with a wealth of detail and accompanied by the names of countries, cities, and geographical features such as mountains and rivers. The map also includes portions of Africa and Asia, thus illustrating the interconnection between the continents. The map is embellished with vignettes on three sides: the upper frieze features nine bird’s-eye views of Amsterdam, Prague, Constantinople, Venice, Rome, Paris, London, Toledo, and Lisbon. The side friezes depict the costumes of noblemen and noblewomen from ten European nations. The bodies of water feature sailing ships, sea monsters, and Neptune riding a dolphin while holding his trident; lions and bears are depicted on the land areas. Excellent example in the third state of four, following the change within the cartouche of the artist’s name to Guilielmo Blaeuw, and still featuring the imaginary island of Frislandia southeast of Greenland; the island was removed in the fourth and final state.
