Johann II Mittnacht A set of three Augsburg silver gilt 'sturzbecher' cups with cover The three oval beakers, which fit one inside the other, meaning that they had to be emptied in a single draught without being set down, as was customary, for example, when hunting. All three beakers bear the dotted-engraved coat of arms of the Counts of Schaumburg-Lippe on their smooth walls. The domed lid, with a small finial, encloses the ensemble for transport. Each bears an engraved inventory number “1” on the underside, indicating that there were apparently several identical sets of beakers. Height with lid 9.3 cm; total weight 294 g. Marks of Johann III Mittnacht, 1743 - 1745. Provenance Formerly art dealership of Dr Eva Toepfer, Luxembourg; German aristocratic ownership.
