94 - Francesco Piranesi and Giuseppe Subleyras, Perspective of the New Square in Padua, based on the general design conceived and largely executed by His Excellency Andrea Memmo, Knight and Procurator of St. Mark, when he served as extraordinary commissioner for the Most Serene Republic of Venice... Rome, 1786. Etching and engraving on three plates. 520 x 1530 mm. Sheet: 590 x 1635 mm. At the bottom, from left to right, the artist’s signature and date: “Giuseppe Subleyras drew / Cav. Frn.co Piranesi engraved, Rome 1786.” Based on a drawing by the architect Giuseppe Subleyras, son of Pierre, who was celebrated in his day as a history painter and portraitist. An extraordinary panoramic view of Padua printed on three separate sheets of thin laid paper, apparently without a watermark. The initials “T.1” are engraved in the upper left corner of the left section. This print, distributed independently, was likely first published in Rome by the artist in 1786. It is listed at a price of 18 francs on page 17 of the 1801 catalog *Calcographie de Piranesi frères*; at that time, the work was already included in the eclectic collection of engravings by Francesco Piranesi that constitutes Volume XXIII of the *Opere di Giovanni Battista Piranesi,* Francesco Piranesi and Others (later republished by Firmin-Didot in Paris between 1835 and 1839). (1) Complete sheet with original margins. Signs of where the three plates comprising the view were joined, and traces of folds. Slight yellowing at the edges, spots of foxing, and a few slightly browned areas along the margins.
