Jean-Michel Papillon, Saint Andrew. Paris: Published by Pierre Guillaume Simon, 1766. Woodcut. 160x88 mm. Sheet size: 208x133 mm. Plate from *Traité historique et pratique de la gravure en bois* by J. M. Papillon,...: a work enriched with the finest examples of his compositions and engravings, Paris, 1766, a treatise on woodcut printing with a first part entirely devoted to the history and evolution of wood engraving, and a second part focused on technique: carving, inking, and printing. In addition to the many woodcuts in the text, this edition was embellished with two chiaroscuro plates; the one shown here is based on a woodcut that Anton Maria Zanetti (Bartsch, XII, 11) based on a drawing by Parmigianino that is now lost (A. E. Popham, *Catalogue of Drawings by Parmigianino*, 1971, vol. I, p. 235, no. O.C.15), and another showing the various states of the engraving. Thin laid paper without a watermark. (1) Plate with wide margins as originally intended, mounted at two points at the top within a modern cardboard mount. Traces of binding at the left edge; minimal and faint spots of foxing.
