24 - Pietro Berrettini (known as Pietro da Cortona), *Tabulae anatomicae ex Archetypis Egregii Pictoris Petri Berrettini Cortonensis expressae et in aes incisae opus chirurgis et pictoribus apprime necessarium*... Rome: Published by Venantius Monaldini, 1788. Etching. 375/378 x 253/255 mm. Sheet: 460x315/320 mm. Excerpt containing 25 plates out of 27 (plates VI and XXVII are missing) from the second edition, edited and with text by the physician and philosopher Francesco Petraglia. Francesco Petraglia removed the additional anatomical details present in Berrettini’s plates at the time of their first publication in 1741, restoring them to a form much more faithful to the original drawings. In his introduction, he attributes the engraving of the plates to Luca Ciamberlano for the first time; Ciamberlano’s monogram appears on plates I and IV. The drawings were created around 1618 by Pietro da Cortona but were first published in 1741; plates I–XIX and XXVII are by Pietro da Cortona, while the other 7 are based on drawings by other artists. Many copies are missing plate 27, depicting the only female figure in the collection and perhaps omitted due to censorship. Beautiful prints on heavy laid paper with a watermark of a “crowned coat of arms with a stylized lily” visible on most of the sheets. (1) Loose stitching. Plates are intact with original margins, minor tears, and slight defects at the edges. A repaired tear on the reverse of plate I and plate XXVI. A marginal tear on plate XXIII. Minimal signs of wear.
