Various authors, Galleria Giustiniana by Marquis Vincenzo Giustiniani. Rome: Carlo Losi, 1757. Engraving. 235/395 × 193/255 mm. Sheet: 535/540 × 365/370 mm. Provenance: an important noble collection. A complete and uniform collection of loose sheets, in two parts. First part: 153 plates numbered 1 through 153, including the title page and the portrait of Marquis Giustiniani dated 1631; Second part: 169 plates numbered 1 through 169, including the title page and the portrait of Marquis Giustiniani dated 1631. Slightly thick laid paper with an “SP” watermark present on all sheets. The collection consists of engravings depicting the most important sculptures from the antiquities collection of Vincenzo Giustiniani (Chios, 1564–Rome, 1637). The drawings and plates were created between 1631 and 1637 by a group of thirty-five Italian and foreign artists, including Joachim von Sandrart, François Duquesnoy, Charles Audran, Claude Mellan, Theodor Matham, Cornelis Bloemaert, and François Perrier. The first numbered edition was printed by Giuseppe De Rossi’s workshop in 1637, shortly before the marquis’s death. By his own disposition, the plates of the Galleria were subsequently bequeathed to the Giustiniani Hotel in Genoa, the city where the engravings arrived between 1638 and 1678, intended for a new print run of the work. The proceeds from the sale of this second edition were to be invested in Monti camerali, for the benefit of the impoverished members of the family consortium. The new edition, after years of uncertainty regarding the actual amount of profit it would yield, was finally published in 1757 under the supervision of Carlo Losi and was likely not followed by any further reprints. It appears that the initial plan for the work called for a single volume that was to illustrate, in addition to the most notable pieces in the collection, views of family palaces and estates, as well as a portrait of the marquis. It was later decided to divide the engravings into two volumes according to a more rigorous antiquarian criterion, dedicating the first to statues of deities, heroes, and illustrious men, and the second to busts and portraits, idealized heads, herms of philosophers and deities, reliefs, sarcophagi, and altars. The engravings also include several portraits of family members, a series of views of the Giustiniani estates, and eight reproductions of paintings depicting the Virgin Mary.
